The Abundant Life
Deuteronomy 28:47 - “Abundance of All Things”
God gave to Israel the “abundance of all things” in their promised land under the law. Those “things” included: family, food, fruit, fashion, and fields, etc. (vss. 3-11). He opened unto Israel “his good treasure” (vs. 11). God’s abundance in riches and goodness is part of his character according to Exodus 34:6; Romans 2:4; Philippians 4:19.
Israel ended up taking the “abundance of all things” for granted, having esteemed it too lightly, and all of the curses found in Dt. 28 have either come to pass more than once or will come to pass in the 7 year Tribulation period.
The lesson is as clear as the passage itself. To whom much is given much is required. What God requires of his servants/his children is that they be faithful stewards of God’s abundant riches. Not only faithful to his voice and to keep his words (vs. 45), but to maintain what’s been received and to maintain the right heart and attitude towards those things which we have received.
The moment the heart (spirit) is no longer joyful or glad over the “abundance of all things,” whether by expectation of more or bored with the experience of the same, that’s the moment we begin to backslide, and the blessings turn into cursing. “Joyfulness and…gladness of heart” are two key ingredients to the “abundant life.”
