All That Stuff
Here is a “riddle” from the Lord in Ezekiel 12:13… How does one go and die in a land that he can not see?
As to how this riddle applies to us in the church age, in verse 2 we see a clue to the riddle, in that, many of God’s children have eyes and ears but they don’t see or hear what God has prepared for them because of a rebellious spirit/nature/heart. This rebelliousness can be a result of a word found in verses 3-7.
The word “stuff” is mentioned 5 times, and that word is a great word to explain what creates spiritual blindness and an attitude of contempt and rebellion. STUFF and more STUFF is accumulated over time and eventually all that STUFF gets in the way of fellowship with the Lord.
Especially in America, Christian Americans have so much STUFF that we have storage units to “house” the STUFF that we can’t stuff into our living space. Eventually we “tear down our barns to build bigger barns” to fit all our STUFF and what still doesn’t fit gets stuffed back into the storage unit while we buy more STUFF.
This reflects the condition of our heart over. It is a good thing for us to take inventory of our hearts from time to time and make sure the stuff we have hid in our heart is the right kind of stuff and the wrong stuff we should throw out. There could be all sorts of stuff in our hearts like “idols” or “stumblingblocks” (14:4-7) that we need to repent of and turn out.
Wesley said, “Anything that cools my love for God is an idol.” May God help us to clean out the STUFF (idols) of our hearts and lives to make room for the Spirit of God, who has the right kind of STUFF we need to fill our “houses” with.
