A Gross Heart

The Lord Jesus Christ is very specific with his words, and here he uses the word “gross” to describe the hearts of those who don’t or won’t “understand” what is being spoken. Nothing has changed since this time, except the spoken word is now dependent upon the written word. Even with the completed canon of scripture in the English of a King James Bible, there are still false teachers teaching false doctrines while the children of God are being deceived by these false doctrines. The reason is the same on both their part - they have a “gross” heart.

What is gross? Websters 1828 defines it multiple ways - Thick; fat; corpulent; Coarse; rude; rough; mean; particularly, vulgar; obscene; indelicate;

as wood or stone; Impure; unrefined; as gross sensuality; dense; not attenuated; not refined or pure; Unseemly; enormous; shameful; Stupid; dull.

You could run any number of these words throughout scripture and come to the same conclusion as to why some of God’s professing children just don’t “get it.” Their “heart is waxed gross.”

There are those who might battle with the victory over the flesh, but that doesn’t stop them from wanting and desiring the truth, and in time they “get it.” But those who have the flesh “figured out” and fancy themselves as “intellectual,” are usually the ones who lack common sense and can’t rightly divide or discern between sound doctrine and false doctrine because they have a “gross” heart (i.e, “thick headed,” “dull minded,” ”hard hearted”)
